Campbell River and District Museum and Archives Society

Winner of the 2010 Campbell River Chamber of Commerce Not-For-Profit Business of the Year

The Museum at Campbell River began with an exhibit in the lobby of a sports fishing lodge in 1958, collected and presented by a group of  people interested in First Nations art and culture of northern Vancouver Island.  The Human history theme was later broadened to include all people.  In 1961 the Museum was registered as a non-profit society, governed by a Board of Trustees.

The growing collection was located in several places in the community before being transferred to a purpose-built facility in 1967 as a local project to mark Canada's Centennial Year.   By 1978 the collection had outgrown this facility;  programming, exhibition, collection storage and preservation needs far exceeded the limitations of the 2000 square foot cinder block building.

With fundraising partially complete, planning for exhibits for a new facility began in 1987.  Eleven recognized experts on the history and ethnology of our region helped to develop an outline of potential topics.  This list was then researched, narrowed and developed into a theme structure and design ideas by Museum staff.  By 1989 a floor plan and basic scale model was made of the major exhibits plan.

In 1994 a 21,000 square foot facility was completed, including 7,000 square feet for a major exhibits gallery and 1,700 square feet for temporary exhibits.  As the major exhibits gallery is now approximately 20% smaller than was originally planned, it was necessary to redesign the gallery.

The new museum is located on  a seven-acre wooded site and has a commanding view of Discovery Passage, an active shipping lane running between Campbell River and Quadra Island.  The forested site offers excellent opportunities for outdoor activities, displays ad interpretation.
