Labour Day

Labour Day September 2, 2024

September 2 – Firing up the Steam Donkey.

Labour Day was originally marked as a day for workers to campaign for better working conditions or pay. On September 2, we will honour some of our labour history in a fun and family-friendly way by bringing to steam the restored 1916 Empire Steam Donkey at the Museum at Campbell River.

Pack a lunch and unwind on our beautiful grounds while listening to the nostalgic sounds of the past—feel the chug of the engine and hear the whistle signals that echoed through the woods from the 1900s to the 1940s.

Let’s come together to appreciate the hard work that shaped our community. Mark your calendars and bring the family for a day of history, fun, and connection!

Activities Include:

  • Donkey boiler coffee & pie
  • Whistle Signal Demonstration
  •  Photos with the Hayes-Anderson Logging Truck
  • Historical footage of steam donkeys in action
  • Self-guided native plant tour

Museum at Campbell River respectfully acknowledges the Liǧʷiɫdax̌ʷ First Nation, on whose traditional lands we work to preserve, interpret and share the collective human history of North Vancouver Island. The Liǧʷiɫdax̌ʷ First Nation is comprised of the We Wai Kai, Wei Wai Kum and Kwiakah First Nations. Our closest neighbors are the Coast Salish Xwemalhkwu, Klahoose and K’ómoks First Nations.

These nations have close connections to the land where Campbell River is located today.
